What AI Coding Agents Actually Do All Day

People ask what managed AI agents actually do. They picture a robot writing code unsupervised. The reality is less dramatic and more useful.

Here's a real week from a client deployment (details changed):

Monday: Agent scans the repo for stale dependencies, opens PRs for safe upgrades, flags breaking changes for human review. This used to take a developer half a day every two weeks. Now it runs on a schedule.

Tuesday: New feature request comes in. Agent writes the first draft — scaffolds the component, writes tests, handles the boilerplate. Developer reviews and refines. The 4-hour task takes 45 minutes of human time.

Wednesday: Agent monitors production logs, catches a pattern of 503 errors, traces it to a connection pool limit, and opens a PR with the fix and an explanation. Developer approves after reading the diff.

Thursday: Client asks for a data migration script. Agent writes it, generates test data, runs it against a staging database, and reports the results. Developer spot-checks 10 rows and ships it.

Friday: Agent generates a weekly summary: PRs opened, merged, rejected. Test coverage delta. Dependency updates. Time saved estimates.

None of this is autonomous. Every output gets reviewed. The agent handles the 70-80% of work that's predictable and repetitive. The developer handles judgment calls, architecture decisions, and edge cases.

The value isn't replacing developers. It's giving each developer a tireless assistant that handles the tasks they'd otherwise procrastinate on.
